TUPPER LAKE

Janet L (Youmell) Charland, 90, of Gettysburg, PA formally of Tupper Lake, NY, died unexpectedly July 19, 2016 in York, PA.

Born August 27, 1925 in Tupper Lake, she was the daughter of Howard and Nettie (Wells) Youmell. Janet was predeceased by her Husband Don Charland in 2003, one brother Raymond Youmell in 1986, and two sisters, Joyce LaClair in 2011 and Geri Eddingfield in 2014.

Mrs. Charland attended Holy Ghost Academy and Tupper Lake High School and graduated in1943. She then graduated from Secretarial School in Syracuse, NY and worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tupper Lake NY.

On November 28, 1946 she married the late Donald Charland.

When New York State took over the Veterans Hospital in 1965, she worked at Sunmount Developmental Hospital as the medical secretary for the chief Psychiatrist until her retirement. She also worked part time at Mercy Nursing Home for many years.

While she worked full time, Janet was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother, always putting her family first. She was a great cook and baker and her brownies were well known to many. She loved to oil paint and entered several paintings in the local Tupper Lake Art Show over the years. In her earlier years before she had her children, she enjoyed entertaining, golfing and skiing and in later years after her children were grown she became an avid bridge player. In 2012 she sold her beautiful home on Tupper Lake and moved to Gettysburg PA.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dawn Marie (Dennis) LaVigne of Malone, NY, Mrs. Kim (John) Varden of Tupper Lake, NY, and Amy Charland of Gettysburg, PA.; four grandchildren, Kirk LaVigne and his wife Amiee of Malone, NY, Todd LaVigne and his wife Missie of North Lawrence, NY, Mathew Charland and Emily Charland-Snoots of Gettysburg, PA.; and three great grandchildren, Tristan and Fionah LaVigne and Skylyn Charland.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at 11am. Family will greet guests prior to the mass.
