Obituary for Charlcie Ann Delehanty (Burton)

    Charlcie Ann Delehanty (Burton)
    TUPPER LAKE
Charlcie Ann Delehanty, 94, departed this life on Tuesday, December 12th, 2017. Born March 11, 1923 to Charles L. and Sarah Emily Holton Burton in Speer, Oklahoma, she graduated from Antlers, OK High School in 1940, receiving the American Legion Award for character and scholarship. She attended Eastern Oklahoma A&M College until the attack on Pearl Harbor, when she enrolled in the Paris Training School for Nurses in Paris, Texas. She graduated in January 1945 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She was later stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and Camp Joseph T. Robinson at Little Rock, Arkansas, where she provided care for the sick and wounded returning from WW II. There she married John E. (Jack) Delehanty, himself injured in an aircraft crash stateside while on a low-level contour flight as an airman instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps. They were married for 56 happy years and had three children, John David (Jackie), Eileen, and Alex, all born at Poughkeepsie, New York near Wappingers Falls, Jack’s childhood home.
The family moved from Poughkeepsie to Tupper Lake, NY in 1957, upon her husband’s transfer there by the U.S. Veteran’s Administration to the Sunmount V.A. Hospital. The family relocated to Bethesda, Maryland in 1965, when the V.A. closed the Sunmount facility.
Charlcie was employed as a registered nurse her entire working career. Among her work places were Mercy General Hospital in Tupper Lake, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, and the Parklawn Health and Human Services facility in Rockville, MD.
Charlcie and Jack retired to Tupper Lake in 1975. Their love of the Adirondacks brought them back. During the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, Charlcie drove for the British athletes; she volunteered eight summers on the survey for the Atlas of Breeding Birds of NY State; and for many years reported on the birds of the Tupper Lake area for the NY State Ornithological Society’s “Kingbird Magazine.”
She was a member of the Raquette River Quilters and an award-winning master quilter. Charlcie was devoted to her family and friends, loved to cook, quilt, garden, read, bird watch and enjoy all the beauty of the Adirondacks. She cherished her get togethers with friends at the local restaurants and loved to laugh and discuss the issues of the day.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all her brothers and sisters: Charles (“CL”), Robert, David, Elaine, and Mary Sue and her husband Jack. Her 3 children, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren survive her.
Her wishes for no calling hours nor services will be observed by her loving family, although a graveside gathering will occur upon her interment with her beloved Jack at St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Tupper Lake, in the Spring.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Charlcie and her love for all things wild, may make contributions to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake. Online condolences may be at www.stuartfortunekeoughfuneralhome.com.
