Walter J. Mallon, 78, of Tupper Lake passed away at his home on Saturday, July 9, 2016. Born March 29, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Walter and Margaret Wynn Mallon. Walt grew up in Brooklyn. After high school, he worked various jobs as a psychiatric aide, bartender, longshoreman and truck driver. He was briefly married to Gail, who's name he had tattooed on his right forearm, but an annulment ended that union. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army in 1961 serving in Germany during the View Nam Conflict, being discharged in 1963. He married Mary Ann Durante in June of 1962 and joined the New York City Police Department in 1966, retiring in 1983 due to a job related injury. During his early years with the NYPD "he walked the beat" and participated in many of New York City Parades. In 1985 Walt married Stella Zuris in Brooklyn. In 1988 they relocated to Tupper Lake. Walt was an active member of the VFW. He enjoyed boating and being with friends. He was a very generous spirit with a smile and a joke. He is survived by his wife Stella, daughter, Margaret Peppe and her husband Edward, sons, Michael Mallon and his wife Erin, Daniel Durante, Charles Mallon and his wife Janet, stepson, Nicholas Perri. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 3 great-granddaughters and a sister, Maureen Keeler and her husband George. Walter was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife, Mary Ann, his younger brother Chris, and a sister Elizabeth. Calling hours are scheduled for Saturday, August 6th from 12 noon- 3 pm at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Alphonsus cemetery with full military honors and a reception at the VFW post 3210. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Tupper Lake rescue squad or High Peaks Hospice.
