Laurette C. Nadeau, 90, of Tupper Lake, died Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Mercy Living Center, where she had been a resident since November, 2013.
Born November 6, 1925 in St. Leon, Quebec, Canada, she was the daughter of Joseph and Martina (Gosselin) Fournier.
On September 10, 1947 she married Mathias Nadeau in St. Leon, Canada. They moved to Tupper Lake in 1957. In 1961 they purchased the Waverly Hotel, a prominent landmark in Tupper Lake and favorite haunt for local loggers. Laurette proudly relished her role as a mom to those who lived or frequented the establishment. They operated the hotel until its destruction in 1983.
Laurette enjoyed caring for her family members and grandchildren for many years afterwards. She was a wonderful cook especially in traditional French Canadian cuisine.
Laurette is survived by three sons: Gerald (Mary) of Rocky Point, Long Island, Bernard (Joan) of Plattsburgh, and Christian Nadeau of Watertown; and one daughter, Chantal Skiff of Tupper Lake with which she resided for many years, 10 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. Also surviving her are sisters: Georgette (Jean Marie) Fournier, Raymonde (Lucien) Roberge; and sister-in-law’s Cecile Nadeau, Pauline St. Hilaire, and Claire Brousseau. She was predeceased by her husband, Mathias, infant daughter Sylvie, and one brother Guy Fournier, five brothers-in-law, and six sisters-in-law, all from Canada.
Calling hours were held Tuesday, at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial has held Wednesday, at St. Alphonsus Church. Burial will be in May in the St. Alphonsus Parish cemetery.
