Edmund J. “Eddie” Lewis, 73, passed away at his home on Saturday, October 17th.
Born February 7, 1942 in Fall River, Mass., Ed was an exceptional man who overcame many hardships.
As a child, he held no record of his parents or family members. After leaving a state orphanage at the age of 9, he was left to raise himself. He did so with the help of the church, and by earning a meager wage at a local bakery.
As a young man, he worked for a carbon paper company in Holyoke, Mass., before entering culinary school in 1965. It was by fate that he moved to Tupper Lake a few years later. His truck broke down when traveling through the area. While it was being repaired, he accepted a kind gesture for a warm meal and never looked back.
Over the years, Ed held various jobs to include Big Tupper Ski Lodge and Sunmount. He was also a member of the TL volunteer fire dept. and rescue squad. He returned to his passion of cooking however, when he worked as a chef for Mason’s Restaurant and then The Boston Gardens. He went on to become head chef at the Saranac Inn Golf Course and Country Club, where he retired after 14 years. In retirement, he continued to work as a driver for LaPlante’s Taxi.
Ed was a kind person who always remained optimistic, regardless of his circumstance. He held his faith with each struggle and joy; providing an example for all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Carol (Richardson) Lewis (Tupper Lake, NY), his friend and previous wife Donna LaPlante (Tupper Lake, NY), 3 daughters – Danielle (Fort Myers, Fl.), Michelle (Fort Myers, Fl.) and Janelle (Watertown, NY), 3 granddaughters – Amber, Brittney and Riley, and a Grandson – Evan.
Calling hours and funeral service will be held Friday October 23rd from 5 - 6 pm at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home.
